Why this matters
- Health is shaped by where we live, work, and play, we call these the building blocks of good health and you can learn more here.
- Inequalities mean people in some areas live 18 fewer healthy years on average.
- Together, we can raise awareness and push for change.
FAQs
-
What is healthy life expectancy? Healthy life expectancy is based on self-reported assessments of general health and indicates the average number of years a person can expect to live in good health. These are the most recent estimates available for healthy life expectancy across the UK.
-
Where did you get the healthy life expectancy data from? Healthy life expectancy data is drawn from figures released publicly by the Office for National Statistics. For the UK, the data covers the periods 2011–2013 to 2022–2024. These are the most recent comparable estimates of healthy life expectancy available across the UK. The data has been analysed by the Health Foundation.
-
Why does healthy life expectancy differ in different areas? Healthy life expectancy varies across the UK due to differences in the building blocks of health, including income, education, and housing. Areas with limited access to these foundations often face higher levels of preventable illness, which can reduce the number of years people live in good health.
