Get Well Soon Britain
In October 2023, Health Equals took to the skies of Manchester and Liverpool to send an important message to politicians at Conservative and Labour party conferences: Get Well Soon Britain.
In some parts of Britain, people live 16 years longer than in others. Without the building blocks of health and wellbeing – such as good jobs, decent homes, and a healthy environment – our country will not thrive. Poor housing, stressful jobs, and toxic air is impacting our health every day. Millions of us aren’t as well as we could be – but it doesn’t have to be this way.
We’re calling for a new Bill of Health that would set out an ambitious commitment to improve the health of the nation, and promote the building blocks of health and wellbeing across government.

In some parts of Britain, people live 16 years longer than in others.
In the 1950s, the UK had the highest life expectancy of the G7 countries. Now only the USA among the G7 has a shorter life expectancy.
In Great Britain, there are 85,000 preventable deaths each year – that’s one death every 6 minutes. It doesn’t have to be this way.

What has a balloon got to do with health and wellbeing? We want to raise awareness of the importance of the building blocks of health among politicians and policy makers. What better way to do this than with a giant balloon that dominates the skyline? The balloon is a stark reminder of the 85,000 preventable deaths every year in Great Britain. These are deaths that could be avoided through action to prevent the causes of ill health by addressing factors like cold and damp homes, low-paid and stressful jobs, poor quality food, and air pollution.
-
Did the balloon have a climate impact? The balloon and wider materials we used are 98% recyclable. We re-used the same balloon for both party conferences, and the material will be recycled into horse bedding.
