WHAT’S THE LIFE EXPECTANCY IN YOUR AREA?
Life expectancy is the number of years a person can expect to live.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

Right now in the UK, people’s lives are being cut short because of where they live. It doesn’t have to be this way. Join the campaign for change.

What affects life expectancy?

The number of years a person can expect to live is affected by many things, from good-quality homes, to stable jobs, social connections, and neighbourhoods with green space and clean air. We call these factors the building blocks of health and wellbeing.

Lives being cut short

Not everyone in the UK gets the same opportunities to live healthy lives. People who live in our poorest neighbourhoods are dying years earlier than people in the wealthiest areas. And evidence shows that these health inequalities are getting worse.

Change is achievable https://www.health.org.uk/evidence-hub/money-and-resources/income/relationship-between-income-and-health | www.health.org.uk

Inequalities can be reduced by improving the things we know shapes health. Health Equals was born out of the need to rebuild foundations to improve life expectancy and reverse health inequalities in the UK.

ABOUT

HEALTH EQUALS

We’re often told that our health is down to a combination of our genes and individual choices, but research has shown that’s only part of the story.

The world around us shapes our health and the wellbeing of society overall – from quality homes that are warm and safe, to stable jobs, clean air, neighbourhoods with green space, and social connections. All of these things impact our health and how long we live.

But these building blocks of health aren’t available to everyone in the same way. Right now, in the UK, things like poverty and poor living conditions are damaging health and wellbeing and cutting lives short.

We’re campaigning to change that; to shape a society where each of us has access to the building blocks of health.

BUILDING

BLOCKS

Our health is shaped by the world around us – from good-quality homes, to stable jobs, social connections, and neighbourhoods with green space and clean air. These factors are what we call the building blocks of health and wellbeing. While access to health and social care impacts our health and wellbeing, these building blocks have a far stronger impact.
